It seems over the
years, some questions keep coming up frequently. We thought we would answer
some of them here:
1. "How
does the U-Brew thing work anyway?"
In a nutshell, you would come in and pick a wine/beer kit that you want
U-Brewed, then pay for the kit, (or the whole fee), which transfers the
ownership of the kit from us to you. You must then sign a customer declaration
stating that you will not resell the wine/beer you make or serve it at
a Special Occasion Licensed event, and that you mixed the ingredients
and pitched the yeast. Then you would go to the back, mix the ingredients,
pitch the yeast, and you are done until we filter the wine/beer. We will
give you a call when your wine/beer is ready and you would pick a bottling
time. Our equipment is all electric, so it is not a messy ordeal at all;
in fact, most first time bottlers are surprised how easy it is. It takes
1/2 hour to bottle a batch of wine, 45 minutes to bottle beer, and 15
minutes to can beer. You get 30 bottles (750 ml) of wine, or 60-65 cans
(355ml) or bottles (341 ml) of beer.
2. "You
can put the beer in cans?"
Yes, you can! The can comes in 2 parts, the lid and the can. You fill
the can, put the lid on, seal it, and you're done. It costs approx. $15.00,
give or take a dollar, for the cans for a batch of beer.
3. "How
hard is it to do this at home?"
Its really not too hard at all. You need an equipment kit, and a wine/beer
kit, and you're off. The instructions for our kits are very easy to read,
and we are there to help you with any problems that may arise. When you
make wine/beer at home, generally the procedure is as follows:
Clean and sterilize your fermenter and spoon,
Pour bag from the kit into fermenter,
Add any additives that the instructions call for,
Top up to the 5 gallon mark with water, and pitch the yeast,
Rack (syphon) off the beer in 3-5 days, wine in 7-9 days into your
sterilized carboy,
Add the additives to stop the yeast from working and the finings
as per the instructions in the wine kit. Beer just sits and clears,
With wine you can filter and bottle, or just bottle. With beer,
it is racked off, sugar is added, and then it is bottled.
Wait the recommended time, then enjoy.
4. "I've
got a whole bunch of blackberries/plums/other fruit at home, how do I
make wine out of them?"
Click here for our recipe page that has
recipes for blackberry wine and plum wine. The internet has many sites
devoted to fruit wine recipes, and we are just a phone
call or E-Mail
away if you require further assistance.
5.
"When do you open/close?"
We are open 9-5 Monday to Friday, and 9-4 on Saturdays. We are closed
Sundays and holidays for product research and recovery from product research.
6.
"Where are you located?"
We are at 8A-140 Teminal Avenue in Nanaimo, across the street from Mrs.
Riches restaurant, in the strip mall that has Taco TIme, Sprott-Shaw College,
Lordco Auto Parts and H&R Block.
9. "What
does this (insert a wine or beer making chemical here) stuff do?"
Good question. Click on one of the links below to see the descriptions
of all the additives that you will come across in beer and winemaking.
Wine Additives
Beer Additives
Cleaners, Sanitizers, and Preservatives
Finings
10. "What
is an F-Pack?"
An F-Pack is a bladder of juice added when you stabilize certain
Winexpert wine kits to add body and sweetness. It is based on an German
method of sweetening, and the results are fantastic!
11. "My
White Zinfandel/White Merlot came out pink. Did I screw it up?"
No, you didn't. Both of these wines are blush wines that are poorly named.
With blush wines, the skins from the grapes are removed after a few days
contact to give a hint of colour. These wines are best-sellers at the
store, so come in and check them out, if you h
We hope this may
have answered some of your questions, but if you have others, give us
a call, and we will try our best to get you
an answer.
